What is Used to Repair Broken Drains?

In these types of pipeline repairs the drainage professionals have first to gain access to the affected area of pipe from the surface. They will find the nearest manholes and operating through them. Then, the experts in drain lining start by applying a special resin property to the felt sleeve. The resin contains an active catalyst that is imbued into the pipe liner before installation. The PVC felt sleeve is later installed in the damaged or old drainage pipe.

What Materials Are Used To Fix Damaged Drains?

Our technicians start by applying a special resin property to the felt sleeve which contains an active catalyst that the liner is impregnated with before installation.

How Does The Drain Lining Application Work?

The saturated liner is positioned in the drain and inflated in place to the shape of the host pipe using specialist air machines. Once this inversion process is complete, the resin cures and the material becomes rigid, leaving a new smooth and watertight interior. These repairs are carried out from access points such as a manhole or a small localised excavation and can be installed within a couple of hours.

What can you expect from a CCTV Drain Survey Service from Drainsmart?

The video footage captured during our CCTV camera inspections can be saved onto a DVD or USB hard drive and/or sent electronically after it has been analysed upon closer inspection. A report will then be issued demonstrating a schedule of remedial works should any defects be discovered together with a computerised drawing showing the drainage layout.

Drain lining can help to prevent this by creating a smooth, hard surface that tree roots cannot penetrate. Increases the flow capacity of your drains: A damaged or leaking drain can restrict the flow of water. Drain lining can help to increase the flow capacity of your drains by creating a smooth, continuous pipe. Improves the appearance of your drains: A damaged or leaking drain can be unsightly. Drain lining can help to improve the appearance of your drains by creating a smooth, uniform surface. If you are considering drain lining, it is important to talk to a fully accredited National Association of Drainage Contractors (NADC) engineer to discuss your specific needs. They can help you determine if drain lining is the right solution for you and recommend the best type of lining for your pipes.

  • A structural soft felt liner is cut to length and installed from the start of the access point (a manhole or breach in the pipework) whereas a structural patch liner comes in lengths of 600mm or 1000mm and is positioned where needed in the drain. If there are a number of fractures along the run, structural soft felt lining is the better option as you can cover more of the drain with the one sleeve however if you only have an isolated defect further down the line, a structural patch liner is the more economical choice. Structural patch liners are also used if there are branch connections in the system because a structural soft felt liner would seal these off although we do have Dancutter lateral cutting machinery that can reopen the connections if necessary.

  • In both structural soft felt lining and structural patch lining, the sleeves are “wetted out” with the resin containing a catalyst before being inserted into the drain. The saturated drain liner is then positioned where needed and inflated in place to the shape of the host pipe using specialist air machines. Once this inversion process is complete, the resin cures and the material becomes rigid, leaving a new smooth and watertight interior.

  • If there is adequate access to the drainage system, i.e. a manhole, lining causes minimal disruption however there are cases where we will have to carry out localised excavations to allow us breach the system. We try to avoid this wherever possible and look at alternative methods of drain repair but sometimes this is the only approach.

  • Unfortunately not. It is definitely the preferred method of drain repair for a number of reasons but some damage can be too severe to allow a drain liner to be installed, such as a collapse.

  • On occasion a non-toxic smell can be detected upon completion of drain lining however this is an odour only and not dangerous and meets all WRc requirements. If any residents find the smell unpleasant the manufacturers recommend that all windows are opened to allow a through-draught until it dissipates.

Drain Lining in London Customer Review 3
"Very helpful and efficient. We had a very old gutter drain that was leaking underground with water penetrating the cellar wall. They excavated and replaced about a metre of piping, relined another two metres of pipe and then replaced the gully. All done in a small space without damaging the plants. And the price was very reasonable."
