As lockdown in England eases, it’s becoming business as usual for many people - as day-to-day life resumes in the “new normal”. As sure as life will go on, Drainsmart are still here for homeowners and landlords experiencing drainage emergencies. One of the reasons people call our friendly and experienced company is for emergency drain clearance in London and the surrounding areas, such as Bromley, Beckenham, Croydon and more. There are several reasons why your drains may need clearing, so often people choose to have what’s called a CCTV drain survey of their drains in order to assess the issue first before committing to a full-on clearance.
What’s a CCTV Drain Survey?
This is a process whereby sewage engineers place cameras into the pipework in order to assess the drainage system. The footage from the CCTV drain survey is then reviewed in case there are any issues such as cracks in the pipework or blockages. For the latter, it could be that pumping water at high pressure through the system will be enough to clear it.
What should I do if I need emergency drain clearance?
There are some DIY solutions to a blocked drain but these can sometimes lead to more damage, such as cracked pipework, a damaged channel, and creating blockages further down the drain run. By getting in touch with Drainsmart, you can book a National Association of Drainage Contractors (NADC) approved specialist to come and take a look. Our drainage engineers are highly experienced with drain clearance in the London area, as well as the surrounding areas.

What causes a blocked drain?
Common causes of a blocked drain include the flushing of non-disposable items, such as wet wipes, nappies, sanitary products and the like. Always check the packaging of an item if you plan to flush it down the loo. Trees and leaves also contribute to blocked drains, especially during autumn when the falling of leaves is heavy. Kitchen substances such as grease and fat are also regular offenders, whereby people wash their cooking fat down the sink after a meal. It is best to put these substances into the food waste bin or even just your normal bin. Hair can often cause drains to block and needs clearing. This is something people can sometimes do themselves and some products can be purchased which will remove this from drains - although their effects can sometimes be questioned.
